Personal Statement
During secondary school I did not enjoy any subjects I was studying but I had a natural affinity towards PE and consistently achieved top of the class grades and exceeded expectations. Unlike many of my friends, I did not have a career in mind or a subject that I could see myself studying at college. Despite being a high achiever in Sport, it was not subject I wanted to pursue a career in and I was frustrated about what steps to take after my GCSE’s. I have always been passionate about music and in my spare time was helping a friend, who aspires to be a DJ, produce his music and promote him via social media. Soon after finishing my GCSE’s I received a lot of compliments about my work with my DJ friend and I realised I felt very passionate about the production of dance music and I had a keen interest to further my knowledge of the subject.
Studying Artist Management and Music Events level 3 at Brighton Metropolitan College has reinforced my decision to pursue a career in the Music Industry. The course has enabled me to build my knowledge of the commercial music ecosystem. It has strengthened my understanding of how to build a network, the importance of growing a network and how to communicate effectively on a professional level. My recent course project gave me an opportunity to collaborate with a fellow student to produce and show my work from a different perspective.
I aspire to become an Artist Manager or A&R Manager and believe these roles are well suited to my personality, strengths and qualities. As an Artist Manager I will shape an artists career. My creative mindset will enable me to develop the artist, their music and their brand. My natural leadership and negotiation skills will enable me to identify and secure commercials deals beneficial to the artist career. I want to lead a team that identifies untapped talent and supports them to reach their potential.
In addition, I've been frustrated with the lack of information available for students who are passionate about starting a career in the commercial music business so I am launching The Music Industry Careers Hub (The Mic). A knowledge hub based on interviews and career showcases from real life industry professionals including advice, tips and tricks, highs and lows to help people like me level up, build a network and kick start an exciting career.
Furthermore, when I have completed my course I intend to apply for an entry level job with an artist management company or record label. I understand that gaining an entry level role in the Music Industry is very competitive and I feel that my passion and voluntary work with my website will demonstrate my passion for working in the industry and my ability for going above and beyond as well as help me stand out from the crowd when applying for a job.
